WELLS AND CHEDDAR TOUR OVERVIEW

Private day tour from Bath to visit the historic cathedral-city of Wells, explore the region's most dramatic scenery and taste famous local produce - Cheddar cheese!

I will take you on a walking tour of Wells, England's smallest city. This charming city has interesting connections to Bath (and my family!) which I will explain on the tour. We will visit its magnificent 13th century cathedral (my favourite cathedral in the region) and see the world's 2nd oldest working clock and visit Europe's oldest residential street.

We will also visit Cheddar, the birth-place of the famous cheese. We will visit the only cheese factory in Cheddar which is still making Cheddar cheese using traditional methods. At the factory you will see how the cheese is made and get to try different varieties of their cheese. If you enjoy cheese check out my Insider Tip 2 at the bottom of this page!

Before returning to Bath we will drive through the spectacular Cheddar Gorge, England's largest gorge. The drive through the gorge has been named as the most scenic drive in Britain. You will have the option to walk to my favourite viewpoint on the gorge which gives rewarding panoramic views of the area and the gorge. Alternatively I will drive you to a great viewpoint over the area where no walking is required! We will return to Bath around 5pm.

The walk to the viewpoint on the Cheddar gorge takes approx. 30 minutes (one-way) and includes a steep 20 minute ascent on uneven ground. The trail can be slippery and muddy when there has been rain. This walk is optional depending upon your interest and level of mobility. If you prefer not to do this walk I will drive you to a great viewpoint over the local area where walking is not required.

INSIDER TIP 1: Wells has an outdoor market every Wednesday where you can sample and buy local produce and gifts. If you would like to experience this - please select a tour on a Wednesday.

INSIDER TIP 2: On Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays the Cheddar Cheese factory offers a VIP experience which gives a more in-depth insight into how authentic Cheddar Cheese is made. Pre-booking is essential so if this is of interest please contact me in advance so that I can check availability. A supplement will apply for the VIP experience. Please click here for my blog post about Cheddar Cheese and this experience.

INSIDER TIP 3: If you are a fan of British comedy you may be interested to know that the city of Wells was "Sandford" in the cult-film "Hot Fuzz". The film was one of 3 films known as the Cornetto Trilogy featuring Simon Pegg (Mission Impossible, Star Trek) and Nick Frost. The first film in the trilogy was "Shaun of the Dead", a funny zombie film. Hot Fuzz is about a policeman who moves to a sleepy town, Sandford, where he disovers that some of the locals are not as innocent as they seem! You may like to watch Hot Fuzz before the tour and then see if you can recognise places as we walk around Wells!
